Research into reuse and recycling of ancient sculpture and architecture has often underestimated the number of times reuse has occurred during an object’s life cycle. This is in part due to the lack of consensus in how to record reuse in archaeological and museum contexts and in part due to preconceived assumptions regarding the motivations for reuse and recycling practices. In this lecture, I will introduce new research on the practicalities and motivations for reuse and recycling, exploring multi-cultural responses from Hellenism to Tourism in Nea Paphos Cyprus, and the broader Eastern Mediterranean basin. I will highlight new field methodologies that can be employed to more accurately account for historical instances of reuse. The lecture will conclude with a reflection on current issues facing the storage of archaeological finds, and question if creative re-use might be an ‘old’ solution worth considering.
