Agricultural Networks in the Cyclades
Directors: Dr Dimitrios Athanasoulis (Director of the Ephorate of Antiquities of the Cyclades); Dr Emlyn Dodd (Institute of Classical Studies, UK).
This project seeks to better understand the ancient production of Cycladic wine and olive oil and their integration into larger networks of rural land exploitation and trade. It integrates surface survey, geophysical prospection and digital documentation to detect and map visible and subsurface material. Current fieldwork is focusing on Paros.
Perachora Peninsula Archaeological Project
Directors: Dr Panagiota Kasimi (Director of the Ephorate of Antiquities of the Corinthia); Dr Susan Lupack (Macquarie University).
Since 2020, this synergasia between the Ephorate of the Corinthia and Macquarie University has investigated the economic, political, and religious landscapes surrounding the Sanctuary of Hera Akraia at Perachora, which was originally excavated in the 1930s and again in the 1960s, using intensive survey, legacy data verification, photogrammetry, and Lidar.
Zagora Archaeological Project
Directors: Dr Lesley Beaumont (University of Sydney); Dr Stavros Paspalas (AAIA; University of Sydney); Dr Paul Donnelly (University of Sydney).
Originally excavated in the late 1960s and early 1970s, the Andros island site of Zagora is famous for its well-preserved Early Iron Age settlement. These renewed excavations use cutting edge methodologies to better understand the site’s manufacturing and processing activities, hydrological infrastructure, and animal husbandry practices.
Torone Harbour Project
Directors: Associate Professor Tom Hillard (Macquarie University); Associate Professor Lea Beness (Macquarie University); Dr Richard Jones (University of Glasgow)
Inaugurated in 1993, this project has mapped the underwater extent of the terrestrial site of Torone. Attention is now focused on the floodplains to the northeast of the site to establish the area’s taphonomy and timescale of the landscape’s transformation.
Paphos Theatre Excavations, Cyprus
Directors: Dr Craig Barker (University of Sydney). Senior team led by Emeritus Professor J.R. Green (University of Sydney) and Dr Smadar Gabrieli (University of Western Australia)
The Hellenistic-Roman theatre of World Heritage-listed Nea Paphos in Cyprus has been investigated by the University of Sydney since 1995. In addition to six centuries of theatre architecture, the team researches urbanism, infrastructure, water supply, medieval structures and industries, and a range of finds from the Hellenistic to modern era.
