In Greece, a permit is required if you want to:
- View and photograph material in a museum’s collection, especially objects not on display
- Study an assemblage from a fieldwork project
- Do any kind of recording activity at a site, including measuring or photography of any building remains
- And for more activities like this!
Foreign researchers are not permitted to apply directly for these permits in Greece. The AAIA must apply for the appropriate permit on your behalf. For certain types of projects, the AAIA also consults with the Australian Government.
Separate permits are required for the publication of photographs or images, including those previously taken by the researchers themselves.
Furthermore, the Hellenic Ministry of Culture now charges a fee to publish photographs and drawings of objects in Greek museums.
Please read the guidelines here to understand what activities require a permit and their respective application process.
If you have any questions about your proposed activities with regard to Greek permit requirements or access arrangements in Greece, please contact aaia@otenet.gr.
