Individual Membership
The AAIA is legally constituted under Greek law as one of twenty foreign archaeological schools in Greece. The Hellenic Ministry of Culture only allows researchers from postgraduate level onwards to be formal members of its foreign archaeological schools.
To respond to this, we must distinguish between our Researcher and Friend categories.
We ask all our supporters to rejoin now under these new categories below via Join the AAIA.
Institutional Membership
Institutional Membership of the AAIA opens up a range of opportunities for universities to support their students and scholars to undertake study and research in Greece and to augment academic programming locally. This includes:
- Eligibility for staff to apply for all European Research Council funding opportunities
- Participation in the AAIA’s Internship programme
- Facilitated support for Institutional study programmes in Greece
- Academic seminar by the Gale Visiting Professor
- AAIA-Institutional Travel Scholarship for students

Support
We welcome support from individuals and organisations interested in helping the AAIA to to achieve more substantial undertakings.
Become a Community Collaborator
The AAIA welcomes collaborations with individuals and community groups to promote research and activities of direct interest to our public supporters. This might take the form of financial support for one of our field projects or developing a bespoke opportunity for scholars to undertake research on a topic of interest to a community group or individual.
If you are interested in working with the AAIA to shed light on our understanding of the Hellenic world in this way, please contact the Director at tamar.hodos@sydney.edu.au.
Become a Major Benefactor
Thanks to substantial philanthropic donations and bequests, the AAIA is able to support research on the Hellenic world from a range of academic disciplines and methods in a variety of ways.
For example, the David Levine Library Endowment Fund generously enables the AAIA to purchase books and related resources to support our research community. With over 14,000 volumes, many of which are not available elsewhere in Australia, our specialist library is an invaluable national resource for scholars across a range of disciplines.
To discuss becoming a major benefactor of the AAIA to further its mission to research and disseminate our understanding of the Hellenic world, please contact the Director at tamar.hodos@sydney.edu.au.
Past Supporters
Since its foundation in 1980, the AAIA has benefitted from the active support and encouragement of a number of individuals who have made in kind and financial contributions beyond annual membership dues. Their funding and expertise have enabled the AAIA to augment its educational, research, and outreach programmes over the years.
In recognition, these individuals were awarded the title of Governor of the AAIA. As the AAIA moves to new models of philanthropic recognition in line with current legislation and practice, we retired this honorific in 2025. Nevertheless, we remain forever grateful for the practical and moral support these individuals have shown. To honour them, each has been granted life membership of the AAIA, and we are proud to recognise them publicly here.
